Matter. How SEOs Can Help… Now – Whiteboard Friday

As SEOs, we hold a surprising amount of influence over how the world gets its information. In times like these, when businesses of all stripes are facing uncertainty and we may be looking for ways to help, the skills you use in your day job can be your superpower. In today’s Whiteboard Friday, Russ Jones outlines five ways SEOs can make a difference amid the chaos of COVID-19 — just by doing your job and doing it well.

SEO Project Management, Brands in the SERPs, and Affiliate Marketing Tips

When it comes to SEO, tactics can vary depending on what you are looking to get out of it.  Are you looking to promote your brand? That generally requires a harder focus on dominating the search results and getting many search features to back you or your brand as an entity.  Are you an affiliate marketer? Then your SEO will be driven by keyword rankings and conversions.

What if you are working for a large corporation that requires multiple levels of approvals and authorizations before you or your SEO team can make a simple change like a title tag or footer link? These are all types of challenges faced by SEOs today, yet often the approach to handling each can be completely different.

The 5 Hours of SEO webinar by SEMrush discussed looking at SEO from different perspectives and marketing angles, such as for branding, for affiliate marketing, and those unique challenges of SEO for large corporations.

The multi-faceted SERP is coming (I think)!

How COVID-19 may change the SERP forever

The new sticky side menu functionality at the left side of the page could solve some of the biggest problems Google faces going forward.

What started out as a simple alert panel has evolved into the most prolific set of direct information the Google SERP has ever seen. Google’s on-the-SERP coverage of COVID-19 isn’t only an easy-to-access beast of a data source, it’s also a peek at what could be coming to the SERP… permanently.

Google: Limit HREFLANG Implementations To Where You Have Unique Content

Google’s John Mueller said when it comes to hreflang implementations and translating your pages, it is better to do less than more. He said 140 regions seems like way too much, he said on Twitter „I’d recommend limiting yourself to the number of regions you have unique, human-written, high-quality content for. Less is more.“

Google Shopping opens up to free product listings

After 8 years, Google will bring free listings into its Shopping results as part of an evolution to better compete against Amazon in product search.

Google is taking the significant step of opening up its Shopping search results to unpaid, organic listings. The Google Shopping tab results “will consist primarily of free product listings” starting next week, the company announced Tuesday. (…)

Why we care:

This is an evolution we’ve been watching closely and in many ways is a back to the future moment for Google product search, which used to be free (remember Froogle?), before it shifted to a purely paid product in 2012. Two things have changed since that time: data quality and Amazon.

RYTE Webinar Better Together

Hier eine kleine Zusammenfassung.

Zu den Speakern gehörten Aleyda Solis, Mike King, Cindy Krum, Bartosz Goralewicz, Kevin Indig, Izzi Smith, Marcus Tandler und unser Special Guest Martin Splitt von Google.

Allgemein:

Verlierer u.a. Real Estate, Betting.

Gewinner u.a: News & media publications, Computers & electronics, Hobbies & Leisure

Martin Splitt:

JavaScript, a guided tour

Bartosz Goralewicz:

The Main Pillars of Tech SEO:

Content, Crawling & Rendering, Website Structure / IA, Links

Kevin Indig:

Why it’s important for companies that they make the right decisions, especially in and after a crisis.

SPEED is of the essence.

Keyword Research Tools:

eBay Explore à ähnlich, v.a. für Produkte. Mit Suchvolumen. Korreliert mit Google Trends, sollte also verlässlich sein. https://explore.ebay.com/stories?keywords=&activity=sold&siteId=EBAY-DE&trend=all&catid=0&lcf=11&level=1&interval=weekly

Exploding Topics: Discover Exploding Topics. https://explodingtopics.com/

Glimpse: sends a newsletter with trends. https://meetglimpse.com/

Crawling:

Cindy Krum (“Suzzicks”):

Language & SEO: You are doing it all wrong.

Algorithms are language dependent.

Spracheinstellungen sind also sehr wichtig.

Ihr Tipp: Include all keywords in all languages for the country.

Aleyda Solis:

Not only because of the pandemic, but overall it should be: “Remote first!”

Allgemeine Tipps wie “Invest in Gadgets”, z. B. Background Noise Removing Mics, Erreichbarkeitszeiten festlegen, auch für Kommunikation mit Kunden etc.

Google on How Long it Takes to Rank a New URL After 301 Redirect

Google’s John Mueller was recently featured in a video about 301 redirects in which an interesting revelation was made. (…)

However, Mueller is not able to help them directly, he says:

“That’s something that even the SEO team within Google wanted to ask us. Unfortunately, we can’t help the Google SEO team with SEO questions.”

Months ago we learned Google does, in fact, have its own SEO team. (…)

“At a general level, a 301 redirect is just a signal for canonicalization.

Deindexation best practices

 Einzelne Seiten

  • Add a noindex meta tag to these pages ( <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex” /> ).
  • Request Google to remove the URLs from their index via WMT URL removal request.
  • Remove the page from the XML sitemap.

clear-url

Disallowing these pages in robots.txt in no way signals to the search engines that they should be removed from the index, just that they should no longer be crawled. Given that they’re already indexed, blocking in robots.txt would potentially save some „crawl budget“ but wouldn’t do anything to remove them from the index.

So submitting them to the URL Removal Tool would be by far the most effective.

Lastly, don’t forget to submit these same URLs to the Bing Webmaster Tools’ Block URLs Tool, too.

Src: https://moz.com/community/q/quickest-way-to-deindex-a-large-number-of-pages & diverse andere Quellen.

How to Deindex a Site Section

  • Deindexing Filtered Content via URL Parameters. Use the URL Parameters feature in Google Search Console
  • Remove the pages from the XML sitemap
  • Clear cache and temporarily hide all URLs beginning with…

This option will remove all pages beginning with that specific URL folder for 90 days

Src: https://www.upbuild.io/blog/how-to-deindex-pages-from-google/

Einzelne Seiten und/oder ganze Sektionen:

  • Passwort vorschalten hilft natürlich auch immer effektiv.

Words of caution / Interessantes:

  • “Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s any easy/fast way to do this. I just ran a test to see how long it take Google to actually obey a noindex tag, and it’s taken a little over 2 months for them all to be removed.”

Src: https://moz.com/community/q/best-practice-for-deindexing-large-quantities-of-pages

  • Do NOT block the page via the robots.txt file.

Google needs to be allowed to crawl the noindex tag in order to receive the directive that it should be removed from the index. If Google can’t see that the page shouldn’t be indexed, it won’t remove the page.

Src: https://www.upbuild.io/blog/how-to-deindex-pages-from-google/

JavaScript rendering and the problems for SEO in 2020

Croud’s VP Strategic Partnerships, Anthony Lavall discusses JavaScript frameworks that deal with the most critical SEO elements.

  • Anyone working in enterprise SEO in 2020 will have encountered this web architecture scenario with a client at some point. Frameworks like React, Vue, and Angular make web development more simply expedited.
  • There are tons of case studies but one business Croud encountered migrated to a hybrid Shopify / JS framework with internal links and content rendered via JS. They proceeded to lose traffic worth an estimated $8,000 per day over the next 6 months… about $1.5m USD.
  • The experienced readers amongst us will soon start to get the feeling that they’re encountering familiar territory.

John Mueller: Emojis In Google Search Result Snippets Are Unprofessional

John: “You can do a lot of things — but it doesn’t mean that people will go to your site more, or that they’ll convert better. Personally, I find this kind of snippet comes across quite unprofessional, but maybe users in your country disagree. Test results beat Twitter opinions :)”
